Juan Orrego-Salas

Juan Orrego-Salas (born January 18, 1919 in Santiago de Chile ; † November 24, 2019 ) was a Chilean composer and music teacher .

life and work

Orrego-Salas studied piano and composition with Pedro Humberto Allende Sarón and Domingo Santa Cruz Wilson in 1938 . He then taught music history at the Conservatory of the Universidad de Chile , directed the choir of the Catholic University, which he founded in 1938 and completed a degree in architecture by 1943. From 1944 on, however, he devoted himself exclusively to music.

With a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation , he studied musicology with Paul Henry Lang , ethnomusicology with George Herzog and counterpoint with William Mitchell at Columbia University . A subsequent Guggenheim Fellowship allowed him to study with Randall Thompson at Princeton University and with Aaron Copland in Tanglewood .

After his return in 1947 he became a professor at the Music Faculty of the Universidad de Chile. In 1949 he went on a trip to Europe where he conducted the world premiere of his Canciones Castellanas , which were played at the 13th Festival of the International Society of Contemporary Music .

After his return to Chile he was editor of the Revista Musical Chilena , 1950 music critic for El Mercurio , Chile's most important morning newspaper. In 1953 the Universidad de Chile appointed him Professor Extraordinario for Composition. After another visit to the USA, he became director of the Instituto de Extensión Musical , which is responsible for the Orquesta Sinfonica de Chile , the National Ballet and a number of choirs and chamber ensembles.

In 1957 Orrego-Salas gave up this position and became the founder of the Departamento de Música (later Instituto de Musica ) of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile . In 1961 he became director of the Latin American Music Center at Indiana University and taught composition at the university's School of Music. In 1987 he retired from teaching as professor emeritus. In 2005 he published the autobiographical book Encuentros, visions y repasos .

Orrego-Salas has received many awards for his work. The Universidad Católica awarded him an honorary doctorate; In 1971 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Fine Arts of Chile. In 1988 he received the Gabriela Mistral Interamerican Cultural Prize of the Organization of American States (OAS), in 1992 the Premio Nacional of the Chilean government, and in 1999 the Universidad Católica appointed him Profesor Extraordinario.
