Fernando Ortiz Fernández

Fernando Ortiz Fernández (born July 16, 1881 in Havana ; † April 10, 1969 there ) was a Cuban scientist , politician and lawyer . He is considered the founder of Cuban anthropology and music ethnology . In this capacity he taught a whole generation of modern Cuban anthropologists. He also made a name for himself as a writer of criminological and historiographical writings.

Life

Fernando Ortiz, or simply Don Fernando , was born in Havana and spent his childhood in Menorca , Spain . In 1895 he returned to Havana, where he began to study law. He finished his studies in Barcelona in Spain and obtained his doctorate in Madrid .

Ortiz entered the diplomatic service and was consul in A Coruña , Geneva and Marseille . In 1906 he became a lawyer at the Cuban Court of Auditors, and in 1908 he became a professor of law in Havana, where he taught public law , political economy and constitutional law. In 1914 he was a co-founder of the Cuban People's University. From 1917 he was a member of the Cuban parliament for the Liberal Party for ten years. In 1931 Fernando Ortiz had to seek exile in the USA because he had written a manifesto against the Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado . In 1933, after the fall of Machado, he returned to Cuba. In 1949 he was the founding president of the Cuban peace movement.

Ortiz introduced the concept of transculturality into the discussion in the 1940s .

Because of his groundbreaking research on Afro-Cuban mythology and Afro-Cuban rituals, Fernando Ortiz is also called the “Third Explorer of Cuba” (after Christopher Columbus and Alexander von Humboldt ). He is buried in the Cementerio Cristóbal Colón in Havana.

One of his students was the Cuban anthropologist and writer Miguel Barnet , who now heads the Fernando Ortiz Foundation .
