The DDO / DtA 1st NSB Wesel was formed from the 284 telecommunications battalion, which had been based in the Schill barracks in Wesel (previously Gustav Heinemann barracks in Essen-Kray ) since 2003 . Its prehistory began in 1960, when the I. Corps was commissioned to set up Telecommunications Battalion 71 in Essen-Kray. This was subordinated to the Northern Army Group in March 1962 and thus part of the NORTHAG SIGNAL SUPPORT GROUP, which led to the allocation of NATO equipment. In October 1970 the battalion was named Fernmeldebataillon 840 NORTHAG. In 1994 moved thatTelecommunications Battalion 890 CENTAG from the Philippsburger Salm barracks to Essen and was merged with Telecommunications Battalion 840 to form Telecommunications Regiment 990, which was reclassified as Telecommunications Battalion 990 in 2002 and finally renamed Telecommunications Battalion 284 in June 2002.
