The Fazilka TV tower is a 304.8 meter high lattice steel tower in Fazilka in the Indian state of Punjab . The tower, which was also nicknamed the Eiffel Tower by Fazilka , serves a region within 100 kilometers for broadcasting television and radio signals from the Jalandar Doordarshan and Delhi Doordarshan stations and is India's second-tallest television tower after the Rameswaram television tower. It is not open to the public.
Building history
Construction of the Fazilka television tower began in 1996 and, according to the original planning, should be completed after around two years. Financial bottlenecks, a shortage of skilled workers and the death of over half a dozen workers during the construction phase delayed the construction project, so that the tower could only be completed eleven years later, in 2007. Its construction cost was around 800 million Indian rupees. It replaced a 1 kW transmission tower, which was no longer strong enough to hold its own against the radio and television signals from Pakistan . Residents of Fazilka asked then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to take measures to curb the influence of Pakistani broadcasters. However, the Fazilka television tower has not yet been able to adequately fulfill its function as a jammer .
