The Elbaue-Ostharz long-distance water supply is a large drinking water pipeline system between the Rappbodetalsperre in the eastern Harz and the Elbaue near Torgau and the operating company of the same name. With the help of the pipeline system, drinking water for the region around Halle (Saale) and Leipzig between Harz and Elbe is transported and made available. The owner and operator is Fernwasserversorgung Elbaue-Ostharz GmbH (FWV), Torgau. The pipeline system is one of the largest long-distance water supplies in Germany.
Water treatment
The raw water is taken from the Rappbodetalsperre in the west of the supply area and from the Elbaue and Dübener Heide in the east. The water treatment takes place in the Harz in the waterworks Wienrode with an output of 180,000 cubic meters per day and in the Elbaue with the waterworks Torgau-Ost (100,000 cubic meters per day) and Mockritz (60,000 cubic meters per day).
Line system
The pipeline system consists of a total of around 720 km of long-distance water transport lines, eleven water tanks with capacities between 40,000 and 2,500 cubic meters (total capacity approx. 202,500 cubic meters) and three pumping stations as well as 156 delivery stations to local networks or end consumers.
Coverage area
In the total supplied region with an area of around 9,000 square kilometers, around 2 million inhabitants use the FWV's drinking water. The FWV is the upstream supplier for the distributors (mostly special-purpose associations, municipalities or municipal companies) who transport the drinking water to the house connection. The supply area lies between Halberstadt and Sangerhausen in the west, Staßfurt and Lutherstadt Wittenberg in the north, Torgau in the east and Zeitz and Weißenfels in the south.
