Ferocactus echidne is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Ferocactus echidne grows solitary to branched. The flattened to cylindrical, cloudy to gray-green shoots reach heights of growth of up to 35 centimeters (and more) and have a diameter of up to 20 centimeters (and more). There are about 13 sharp-edged ribs that are not humped. The amber-colored, thin thorns are needle-like and smooth. The single protruding central spine is up to 5 centimeters long. The seven to nine radiating radial spines are shorter than the central spine.
The funnel-shaped, yellow or red flowers appear at the apex of the shoots. They reach a length of 2 to 4.5 centimeters and have a diameter of 3 to 3.5 centimeters. The spherical to egg-shaped, light green or white and pink-tinged or red fruits are fleshy. They are up to 2 centimeters long and do not tear open with a basal pore.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Ferocactus echidne is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , San Luis Potosí , Querétaro , Nuevo León , Tamaulipas, and Guanajuato .
It was first described as Echinocactus echidne in 1834 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1922 .
A distinction is made between the following varieties :
- Ferocactus echidne var. Echidne
- Ferocactus echidne var. Rhodanthus G.Unger
- Ferocactus echidne var. Victoriensis (Rose) GELinds.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
