Ferocactus haematacanthus is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet haematacanthus means 'red prickly'.

Ferocactus haematacanthus grows individually with spherical to cylindrical, initially glaucous , later green shoots and reaches heights of 30 to 120 centimeters with diameters of 25 to 36 centimeters. There are 13 to 17 ribs . The areoles on it are confluent in adult plants. The thorns are colored blood red. The four central spines are 4 to 8 inches long. The six to seven radial spines have a length of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters.
The funnel-shaped, slightly purple-pink to pink-purple colored flowers reach a length of 6 to 7 centimeters and have a diameter of the same size. The 2 to 3.5 centimeters long, egg-shaped fruits are deep purple in color.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Ferocactus haematacanthus is common in the border area of the Mexican states Puebla and Veracruz at altitudes above 2200 meters.
It was first described as Echinocactus electracanthus var. Haematacanthus in 1850 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . Curt Backeberg and Frederik Marcus Knuth placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1936 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
