Festo Kivengere

Festo Kivengere (* 1919 in Rukungiri , Uganda ; † 1988 ) was a bishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda and an important evangelist . He was the international spokesman for the Church of Uganda. Festo Kivengere was called the Billy Graham of Africa .

biography

Festo Kivengere comes from a "pagan" family. When he was nine years old, the first African missionaries came to his home village. "With them he learned to read. His first book was the Gospel of Luke. Festo Kivengere went to school in Kyamakanda before he attended Kigezi High School. At that time He turned increasingly to Christianity and was an active member of evangelistic groups, and later went to Mbarara High School and Bishop Tucker College in Mukono , where he was trained as a primary school teacher.

In the meantime, Kivengere slipped from his beliefs and became addicted to alcohol and a chain smoker .

In 1946, he heard that the Church Missionary Society (CMS) was looking for people to become missionary teachers. Kivingere responded to the call and was sent to Dodoma for four days . He made the trip with his wife and first daughter.

In the 1970s he reached thousands in Germany with his message.
In 1975 he appeared at the major international youth conference Eurofest '75 in Brussels, organized by Billy Graham .

The well-known for his brutality dictator of Uganda Idi Amin pursued him so Kivengere the country had to leave the 1977th He wrote the book I love Idi Amin , which caused quite a stir. Festo Kivengere was convinced that the love of the crucified also applies to the mass murderer Idi Amin. He explained: “On the cross, Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them because they don't know what they are doing.' As angry as Idi Amin was, how can I do less to him? ”(Original wording: “ On the cross, Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, because they don't know what they are doing.' As evil as Idi Amin what, how can I do less toward him? ” )

After Amin's flight, he returned to Uganda and preached forgiveness and reconciliation, and reached many people with the Christian faith. Kivengere died of leukemia in 1988 .

Trivia

Festo Kivengere had four daughters. He called it Peace ( Peace ), Joy ( Joy ), Hope ( Hope ) and Charity ( Caritas ).
