Fethiye Çetin

Fethiye Çetin (born May 4, 1950 in Maden , Elâzığ Province ) is a Turkish lawyer, writer and human rights activist with Armenian roots.

Life

She was born into a Muslim family in the small town of Maden . Cetin's maternal grandmother, Seher was later award to a birth Armenian Christian woman named Heranuş Gadaryan was that during a death march at the Armenian genocide was separated from her mother to be raised by a Turkish military officials as a Muslim; this fate inspired Çetin to write her first book - a retelling of her grandmother's story called My Grandmother .

Çetin's book My Grandmother put an end to the silence about the Armenians in the Turkish public. The book became compulsory reading at numerous progressive Turkish institutes for higher education, such as Sabancı University . Today's Zaman characterizes the book with reference to "the lost Armenians " as "part of a trend in Turkey grappling with a history of denial , nationalism and fear of political consequences".

In 2009 Çetin and Ayşe Gül Altınay published a volume entitled Torunlar (The Grandchildren), in which people socialized in Turkey talk about their Armenian roots, which have been kept secret until now. In her last book, Fethiye Çetin describes the trial of Hrant Dink's murder from her point of view as a lawyer: Utanç Duyuyorum! (I am ashamed).

In her work as a lawyer, Çetin represented the family of the Turkish-Armenian news editor Hrant Dink, who was murdered in 2007 . In 2008 she signed the Özür Diliyorum petition on genocide.

Since 2012 Fethiye Çetin has been a guest in Germany several times, read from her book My Grandmother and reported on the situation of the discussion about the Armenians in Turkey.
