The Salvia splendens ( Salvia splendens ) is a plant type from the genus sage ( Salvia ). The original range of the species is in Brazil , but it is widespread as a garden and balcony plant in temperate and tropical areas.

description

The fire sage is an annual , herbaceous or subshrub growing plant that reaches heights of up to one meter. Mostly it is branched, the upper parts of the branches are finely hairy, in the lower part however glabrous or almost glabrous. The leaves have long petioles , the leaf blade is ovate, pointed towards the front and rounded at the base. The leaf margin is sawn.

The inflorescences consist of one to three- flowered whorls , which in turn are arranged in a dense or more or less interrupted spike . The large, scarlet colored bracts are not persistent. The scarlet calyx is inflated to flower, membranous and 15 to 20 mm long. The crown is also colored scarlet, its corolla tube is 30 to 40 mm long and enlarged on the upper side. The lower lip of the crown is about 7 mm long. The stylus is hairless.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22 or 44.

Occurrence

The original home of fire sage is the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . As an ornamental plant, the species is distributed worldwide and is cultivated in temperate and tropical areas at various altitudes.
