Firouz Naderi ( Persian فیروز نادری; Born March 25, 1946 in Shiraz , Iran ) is an Iranian-American scientist and director of the Solar System Exploration program at NASA's affiliated Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). He is responsible for long-term strategic planning, coordination of investigations, acquisition of new missions and development of projects in the early life cycle.

Career

Firouz Naderi studied electrical engineering at the Pahlavi University in Shiraz and received a doctorate ( Ph. D. ) for his work on image processing . He received three additional degrees in electrical engineering: Bachelor of Engineering ( Iowa State University , Ames ), Master, and Ph. D. ( University of Southern California , Los Angeles ).

In 1965 he left Iran for the USA . Naderi joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1979. His first work at the JPL was the design and construction of large satellite-based systems, with which nationwide coverage with cellular networks should be guaranteed.

In the mid-1980s he was responsible for the program manager of the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) , the pioneer of today's multi-beam space switching satellites, at NASA headquarters for over two years .

After returning to JPL, he was appointed head of the NASA Scatterometer Project ( NSCAT ) , whose job it was to collect information on wind speed and direction over the oceans for NOAA . His career at JPL includes systems engineering , technology development ( applied research ), and program and project management of satellite communication systems , remote sensing surveillance , astrophysical observations and planetary systems .

In 2000, Naderi became director of the Mars Exploration Program at JPL. In the summer of the same year he made a large contribution to the re-planning of the program, which was defined as a chain of scientific, technical and functionally interrelated missions with biennial rocket launches to Mars. He headed this program until 2005, the greatest successes of which were the landing of the two Mars probes Spirit and Opportunity . Prior to the Mars Exploration Program, Naderi led the Origins Program , a NASA program to find Earth-like planets in other solar systems.

Between 2005 and 2011 he was head of the "Project Formulation and Strategy" department, responsible for recruiting new business areas and for strategic planning.

Firouz Naderi has headed the Solar System Research Program at JPL since 2011.

Awards and honors

In February 2002, Naderi received NASA's highest award, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal , for "excellent contribution to space science and exploration". Firouz Naderi is a member ( Associate Fellow ) of the American professional association for aviation and space technology , the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
