The zodiac sign Pisces ( Greek  ἰχθύες Ichthýes , Latin Pisces , pi for short ) corresponds to the twelfth section of the zodiac from 330 ° to 360 ° ecliptical longitude from the vernal equinox .

The sun is on average between February 19th and March 20th in this sign. Due to the migration of the spring equinox , the zodiac sign Pisces no longer corresponds exactly to the constellation Pisces . Currently, the sun in the Pisces constellation is roughly between March 12th and April 19th.

In addition, since the birth of Christ, the sun has risen on the morning of the spring equinox, on March 21 , in front of the constellation of Pisces. According to the natural cycle of precession , it does so until around AD 2,150. This partial cycle, which lasts 2,150 years, is also called the Platonic month or world month . From the middle of the next century, the sun will rise on the morning of the equinox for the next 2,150 years before the constellation of Aquarius .

After the Tetrabiblos by Claudius Ptolemy

  • the fish are female (I.12) and
  • the Jupiter was the ruler of the character until the Neptune ruler was (I.17), and
  • the Venus is in Pisces exalted .

In ancient Iatroastrology, the feet were assigned to fish as a Melothesian equivalent . The assigned deity was Neptune .

With Cancer and Scorpio the Pisces form the trine of the element water and with Gemini , Virgo and Sagittarius the square of the four common symbols.

The sign was already part of the Babylonian zodiac. It appears on the MUL.APIN boards as the “[fish] tails” (MUL.ZIBBATI.MESH or MUL.KUN.MESH kun.mes).

The symbol has been represented since ancient times as two fish swimming in opposite directions, connected by a string. The astrological symbol is a stylization in which the two vertical lines represent the fish and the horizontal line the connecting cord.

The Unicode character for the symbol is U + 2653 (♓).
