Fittonia albivenis is a species of plant from the genus Fittonia ( Fittonia ) in the Acanthus family (Acanthaceae).

description

Fittonia albivenis is a perennial herbaceous plant that creeps on the ground. The leaves are ovate to oblong and 7 to 10 cm long; they are dark green with striking white stripes along the leaf veins . There are also forms in which the nerve is colored carmine-red.

The yellow flowers are in terminal spikes .

Distribution and location

The home of Fittonia albivenis is in tropical South America . Their distribution area extends over Peru , Ecuador , Colombia , Bolivia and northern Brazil .

The plant loves warmth and high humidity. Plants can be damaged even at winter temperatures below +16 ° C.

Systematics

The description under the current name of Fittonia albivenis by the English botanist Richard Kenneth Brummitt was published in 1979. Synonyms are Adelaster albivenis Lindl. ex hort. Veitch , Fittonia argyroneura Coem. , Fittonia verschaffeltii ( Lem. ) Van Houtte , Fittonia verschaffeltii var. Argyroneura ( Coem. ) Regel and Gymnostachyum verschaffeltii Lem. .

The name Fittonia verschaffeltii in particular is still widely used today.

The leaves of this kind are prepared as tea in the north-western part of the Amazon region and used for toothache.
