Fiverr is an online marketplace for digital services . The company, headquartered in Tel Aviv , Israel , was founded in 2010 and offers freelancers the opportunity to offer their services worldwide. Since the company's inception, more than 50 million services have been processed on Fiverr.

history

Fiverr was founded by Micha Kaufman and Shai Wininger in February 2010. The founders developed a two-way platform where people can buy digital services or sell them as freelancers. Such services included translation , copywriting , graphic design , video editing and programming . The services, called on Fiverr gig, start at 5 US dollars , where the name of the platform comes ( fiver = five ), and now range up to several thousand dollars.

The website had 1.3 million services offered in 2012. In early 2013, the site was among the 100 Most Popular Sites in the United States and one of the 200 Most Popular Sites in the World.

On June 1, 2010, Fiverr received a $ 1 million seed investment from Guy Gamzu and other angel investors. In May 2012, Fiverr received a $ 15 million investment from Accel Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners . The total investment thus reached a level of 20 million US dollars.

In December 2013, Fiverr released an iOS app in the Apple App Store. In March 2014, Fiverr released an Android app on Google Play .

In August 2014, Fiverr received a $ 30 million (Series C) investment from Bessemer Venture Partners, Accel and other investors. This investment increased the total investment to $ 50 million.

In October 2015, Amazon took legal action against 1,114 Fiverr vendors alleged to have published fake reviews on Amazon.com. Fiverr did not deny the allegations, stating, "We worked closely with Amazon to remove services that violated our Terms of Use."

In November 2015, Fiverr received $ 60 million in Series D investment capital led by Square Peg Capital. This investment increased the total investment to $ 110 million. At the same time, Fiverr announced it was expanding its marketplace, giving vendors the ability to place their services at prices above the original $ 5.

In February 2019, the company commissioned Citigroup Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. with an IPO in New York. The IPO took place on June 13, 2019. The stock started trading at $ 21 and rose 90% to $ 39.90 on day one.

Since 2018 the company has its German headquarters in Berlin and a localized website for Germany.

Acquisitions

VeedMe

In 2017, Fiverr took over the video marketplace VeedMe.

AND CO

In January 2018, Fiverr took over AND CO, a software developer for freelancers.

ClearVoice

In February 2019, Fiverr took over the content marketing platform ClearVoice.

Gigs

Vendors on Fiverr create listings selling digital services. These offers are called "gigs" (gig = appearance) on Fiverr. These gigs range from creating a business card to creating logos to programming with HTML , JavaScript , CSS and jQuery . Thus, Fiverr offers actors temporary microjobs apart from typical gig economy jobs like those offered by Uber, Deliveroo and Foodora.

User statistics

The majority of users on Fiverr are young adults, and only 2% of all providers are over 55. Fiverr states that the 55-64 age group grew 375% in the second quarter of 2015.

criticism

Fiverr has been criticized for promoting cheap graphics services. At the end of 2014, the company advertised its offers on Facebook with “You're paying too much for design”, which generated a public controversy. In 2013, Fiverr allowed its vendors to set their own prices.

In May 2016, Fiverr responded to a request from the software company Incapsula, which pointed out users who were offering denial-of-service attacks for $ 5 . The affected offers were then removed, but later reappeared under a hidden name. Fiverr responded to the following criticism with increased security measures and removed illegal offers.

In 2017, Fiverr was criticized for idealizing unhealthy work behavior.
