Flemish parliamentary election 2019
The Flemish Parliamentary Election 2019 took place on May 26, 2019 at the same time as the national parliamentary elections and the European elections. The Flemish Parliament is also the Parliament of the Flemish Community and the Flemish Region . Of the 124 MPs, 118 are elected in the Flanders region and six in the Brussels-Capital region .
Electoral system
The five provinces make up the constituencies within the Flanders region:
- West Flanders Province 22 seats
- East Flanders Province 27 seats
- Antwerp Province 33 seats
- Limburg Province 16 seats
- Flemish Brabant Province 20 seats
The six Brussels MEPs are elected in Brussels by those voters who voted for a Dutch-language list or blank in the election of the Parliament of the Brussels-Capital Region.
Each voter can choose a list by either choosing the list as a whole or by giving any number of applicants a preference vote within a list. The seats are distributed proportionally to the lists within the constituencies according to the D'Hondt procedure , which account for at least 5% of the valid votes in the constituency.
Starting position
In the 2014 election of the Flemish Parliament, the N-VA was by far the strongest party. The N-VA agreed a coalition with the other Flemish governing parties in the national government Michel I , CD&V and Open Vld , whereby a mathematical majority would have existed even without Open Vld. Geert Bourgeois (N-VA) became Prime Minister to succeed Kris Peeters (CD&V).
Parties and candidates
The participating parties essentially correspond to those in the simultaneous election of the Belgian Parliament. A special feature is the UF as a list of the francophone population in the Brussels area, which only competes in Flemish Brabant and was just able to defend its only seat there in 2014.
The N-VA nominated its party leader and Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever the Christian Democrats ( CD&V ) Education Minister Hilde Crevits as a candidate for the office of Prime Minister . The incumbent Prime Minister Geert Bourgeois tops the N-VA list in the European elections.

Government formation
The formation of a government was tedious. After Geert Bourgeois moved to the European Parliament, Liesbeth Homans (N-VA) first became Prime Minister on July 2, 2019 . The coalition of N-VA, CD&V and Open Vld, which has a majority of 16 seats in all three parties despite losses, was continued. The new Flemish government was sworn in on October 2, 2019. The new Prime Minister was Jan Jambon (N-VA) and not Bart De Wever, who was nominated by the N-VA as a candidate for the office before the election .
