Flute (boat type)
Flutes are small raft-like boats in Sietland and neighboring areas . They were used to transport all everyday goods because there were no safe roads in the wet triangle between the Weser and Elbe .
description
The narrow elongated flutes could by narrow channels, Aue (Liihe) , Oste or weather , the Hadler- and Opplnerkanal as well as on the Balksee to fishing punted be. Until the 1970s, they were steered and moved while standing with a long paddle . They could be used to bring milk to the dairy , grain to the grain mills, and building and fuel materials to the moorings on the Medem . Clinker bricks from the surrounding brickworks were transported to Otterndorf , Belum and Neuhaus and from there used to (re) build Hamburg after the Hamburg fire in 1842.
The country was criss-crossed by waterways , so every court had its flutes. They were also used for excursions or for fishing or duck hunting. The stakes were called Fohrholt - Low German for "Fahrholz" - they had metal fittings at one end and a crutch, a T-handle, at the other end . This could be used to push the flute along the bank or on the muddy ground .
The last way to the cemetery was also made with a flute: 500 years ago the death staircase was laid on the bank of the cemetery in Ihlienworth . You can still see where the coffins were unloaded on the right below the old school opposite.
