Flatbread or flatbread is a shoal on the Swedish side of the Kattegat in the province of Halland County . The species-rich area is a Natura 2000 area.

description

The shoal consists of coastal sandbanks and an extensive cold water reef with depths of 10 to 20 meters in the main part and 50 to 100 meters in the outer area (other sources speak of a depth of 5 to 65 meters), which extends over an area of around 100 km² (according to the official demarcation exactly 10,394.5 hectares ). The shallowest depth is 5.9 meters. The area is located about 17 kilometers west of the Swedish coast near Bua, a place in the municipality of Varberg . Most of the shoal lies in Swedish territorial waters , but extends into Sweden's Exclusive Economic Zone in the south . Fladen is known as a productive fishing area. The ocean current keeps the area free of sedimentation . The seabed is not flat, but characterized by rock ridges and gorges .

Lightship

A lightship was stationed at the site from 1892 to 1969 , which was secured with a 2.8-ton anchor and marked on the sides with the word Fladen . The oldest surviving pita lightship has been in the Mari Tima Maritime Museum in Gothenburg since 1990 . The last lightship, in service from 1967 to 1969, was transferred to Stockholm after a few years and is now used as a private houseboat .

There is currently a 26-meter-high lighthouse with a radar beacon on the northeast side of the Fladengrund at 57 ° 13'N 11 ° 50'E .

flora

Flatbread is a typical bank off the coast of the eastern Kattegat with rich underwater vegetation and species-rich, dense growth of macroalgae . The occurrences of calcareous algae ( Haptophyta ) are unique in Sweden , along with those in the shoal of Lilla Middelgrund .

fauna

The clear water and the intact ecological structure make the area a potential breeding area for various species of invertebrates that are adapted to rocky seabeds, as well as for fish. Fladengrund is also a very important feeding and wintering area for seabirds , and an important feeding area for seals .

Species protection and the future

The area is endangered by heavy shipping traffic. To protect this ecotope from fishing with bottom trawls , Greenpeace began with the approval of the Halland provincial government on August 10, 2009, here and near Lilla Middelgrund, with the sinking of granite stones weighing tons .
