life and work

Little reliable data is known about Flaminio Vacca's life. Born near Rome to a family of Spanish descent, he worked as a young man in the workshop of the Mannerist sculptor Vincenzo de 'Rossi , who stayed in Rome between 1546 and 1560 and was initially primarily involved in restoring and making copies of antiquities employed. Around 1572 he was recorded as a member of the "Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon", the papal academy of fine arts in Rome. His most productive time as a sculptor fell during the pontificate of Gregory XIII. In his memoirs he tells how the name of the Roman church San Benedetto della Ciambella came about .
