life and work

Flausino Vale was born in Barbacena in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in 1894 . At the age of ten he began to learn to play the violin from a maternal uncle. He began with violin studies by Pierre Gaviniès and four years later was able to perform the 24 Capriccios Niccolò Paganinis at a high artistic level.

In 1912 he moved to Belo Horizonte to study. He started to study law here. In his free time he played the violin at parties, weddings and in silent film orchestras. He completed his studies, worked as a lawyer and was professor of music history at the Conservatório Mineiro de Música, which was newly founded in 1924 .

Vale has appeared as a violinist in solo concerts and as an orchestral soloist. In the 1930s and 1940s he was often heard in concerts by radio stations in Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro .

As a university teacher, he gained a good reputation as a specialist in Brazilian folk music. He has published articles in journals such as Ariel , Revista Brasileira de Música , Ilustração musical , Resenha musical and Acaiaca . The latter magazine was a culture magazine that appeared in Belo Horizonte in the 1940s and 1950s. He also published three books: Calidoscópio (Poems, 1923), Elementos de folclore musical brasileiro (1936) and Músicos mineiros (1948). He left other works such as Ânfora de rimas (poems) and A música e as profissões liberais unpublished.

As a composer, Flausino Vale left behind a number of works for violin, voice and flute, all with piano accompaniment, five pieces for mixed choir, more than 50 arrangements and transcriptions for solo violin and a collection of 26 preludes comparable to the Capriccios Paganinis. These preludes represent a highly original work in the Brazilian violin repertoire, combining traditional technique with folk music themes and an absolutely unusual use of the instrument. His famous prelude Ao pé da fogueira (At the campfire) was edited, recorded and often performed by Jascha Heifetz in the USA. It is still a well-known work in the international violin repertoire today. Few people know, however, that this piece was written by Flausino Vale.
