The Fleckenmauer is the late medieval fortification of Dalsheim, today a district of Flörsheim-Dalsheim . It is the only almost completely preserved medieval fortification in Rheinhessen .

Geographical location

The Fleckenmauer encloses the historical core of Dalsheim in the form of a warped square.

history

The fortification around the town was built as a uniform structure at the end of the 15th century. In 1840, the two inlet gates were demolished, the moat was filled and the land was subsequently used for gardens.

The Fleckenmauer was restored from 1986 to 1990. As the “urban” defense of a village without city ​​rights , it is a rare historical testimony. It is a cultural monument due to the Rhineland-Palatinate Monument Protection Act and enjoys the special protection of cultural property according to the Hague Convention .

Building

The wall is about 1.1 km long and consists of 80 cm thick limestone. A battlement walked the entire length of the wall. In addition, it was protected by seven towers, all of which have been preserved.

• The Obertorturm is a round tower with key loopholes and a defense platform. The upper area, battlements and roof zone are reconstructions . The tower used to have access to the battlement on both sides . Today the entrance is at street level and enables the ascent of the tower and access to the battlements of the Fleckenmauer to the north.
• The northwest tower is also a full round tower. It has loopholes and a battlement platform.
• The sub-gate tower stands on a square floor plan. The upper floor is lit through eight windows framed with sandstone . A guard lived here with his family until 1833, who locked the gates every night. Building evidence suggests that the tower originally had a surrounding wooden defense platform.
• In the bulging east flank of the wall there is a three-storey semicircular shell tower .
• The Uebenturm is another semicircular shell tower in the southern section of the wall.
• The south-west corner was protected by another three- story rectangular tower .
• The witch's tower is on the west side of the wall . It has a semi-circular floor plan, slot and key loopholes, a military platform with battlements and a brick conical roof made of brick .

Worth knowing

• On the occasion of the restoration, the first Fleckenmauer festival was celebrated in 1988. It has taken place every four years since then.
• Part of the wall is accessible and can be viewed on guided tours.
• In the Handbook of German Art Monuments , the Fleckenmauer is highlighted as an "art monument of special importance".
