The spot quail ( Colinus Leucopogon ) is a bird art of the genus Colinus from the family of quail (Odontophoridae). It is native to Central America.

features

The spotted quail becomes 22 to 24 cm long. The plumage of the males is variable and is used to characterize the subspecies. All morphs have a brown back and are spotted black in the neck. On the side of the head there are two white stripes over the eyes. A narrow dark stripe runs across the eyes. The throat is white. The spotted quail was formerly placed in a single species with the hooded quail , but differs from this by its much smaller head and white spotted belly. Parts of the abdomen can be monochrome in the various subspecies. The males of the spotted quail weigh an average of 140 g, the females 115 g.

distribution and habitat

The spotted quail is common in northern Central America between Guatemala and Costa Rica . It is divided into six subspecies.

The natural habitat of the crested quail are grass savannahs , forest edges and the thickets of tropical and temperate zones. Similar species are only found in the forests of this area.

Subspecies

Six subspecies are recognized. This is:

  • Colinus leucopogon leucopogon ( Lesson , 1842) - nominate form , southeastern El Salvador to western Honduras
  • Colinus leucopogon incanus Friedmann - 1944, southern Guatemala
  • Colinus leucopogon hypoleucus ( Gould , 1860) - western El Salvador to western Guatemala
  • Colinus leucopogon leylandi ( Moore , 1859) - northwestern Honduras
  • Colinus leucopogon sclateri ( Bonaparte , 1856) - southwestern Honduras to northwestern Nicaragua
  • Colinus leucopogon dickeyi Conover , 1932 - northwestern and central Costa Rica
