The animal feature film Flecki, mein Freund ( Japanese仔鹿 物語Kojika monogatari , English Deer Friend ) is a Japanese family film directed by Yukihiro Sawada in 1991.

Main storyline

Eight-year-old Lenny finds a deer calf in the woods. The mother of the deer calf had run into a car after Lenny accidentally startled it. The children of the village learned a love for nature from the forest ranger Mr. Oriya. So it is immediately clear to Lenny that he has to take care of the deer calf. He hides it in a disused station building. He calls it Flecki because of its spotted summer fur.

But the deer calf doesn't want to drink milk. So Lenny carefully questions Mr. Oriya. He knows that Mr. Oriya must not know anything about the calf because otherwise it would have to notify the authorities and he would then have to fear losing Flecki. Oriya tells Lenny that there is a substance in breast milk that newborns need. So Lenny gets milk from a cow that has just had a calf.

This is how Lenny manages to raise the deer calf until it accidentally sets a fire in the station building. He is discovered, but Mr. Oriya can clear everything up. He had seen through Lenny and already notified the authorities. These allow him to raise the deer calf.

Now his friends are also helping Lenny raise the deer calf. When it fell ill, everyone was feverish for its health. So the primary school teacher finally gives the children free so that they can take care of the animal.

As autumn approaches, Flecki has to go back to the forest to his herd and Lenny has to say goodbye to him.

Summary

construction

The film is divided into three parallel actions. In addition to the main plot about Lenny and Flecki, the story of Lenny's father and his grandparents is told.

Lenny's father is a train driver. The family has built a small house right on the railway line in a small village. But the route will be closed in autumn. So Lenny's father has to look for a new job. He decides to work for an insurance company in Sapporo City , which means the family has to move.

Lenny's grandparents are very old and will soon die. But nobody will take over the farm. Lenny's mother's sister was supposed to do so, but she marries a teacher and will move to Tokyo.

After Lenny says goodbye to Flecki, the family goes to Lenny's father's new place of work. But because he realizes that the family is unhappy with the move, he decides to turn back and take over the grandparents' farm.

needs

The central theme at Flecki, my friend , is change. First, Lenny is in the main story. Because of his mishap, he suddenly has to take care of an animal. When he succeeded in raising it, another change awaits him. He has to let the animal that has grown dear to him go again because it can only live appropriately in the forest.

Lenny's father suffers the fate that hits many working people in a rapidly changing living environment. By losing his job, he has to look for a new professional path. Lenny's father first decides on a path that promises him professional advancement and high earnings. Ultimately, however, he decides to have a professional future with his family that will secure him a lower income.

Lenny's grandparents show the biggest change in life - the change of generations. They are firmly rooted in old traditions and want to pass what they have built on to the next generation. But this is initially not interested and, on the other hand, strives for a modern life.

reception

For a family film, it is quite unusual that three parallel actions are shown. So the film is difficult for smaller children to follow.

Cinematographer Akira Shiizuka specialized in animal photography and has filmed several animal films. With Flecki, my friend, he took part in a children's film for the first time.

In Flecki, my friend , there is no fawn, but a deer calf. Due to the strong similarity, this is confused with a fawn in Europe, similar to the Disney film Bambi . That is why Rehkitz is spoken of in the film quiz on the extras of the German Flecki, -mein-Freund -DVD.

Awards

Flecki, my friend won the Japanese Academy Award for Best Music in 1992 and Tomokazu Miura won the Supporting Actor Award at the Mainichi film competition .

Reviews

“First in secret, then with the help of his school friends and the local forest ranger, a 10-year-old boy tries to raise a motherless deer calf. […] A story that is embedded in impressive nature shots and told with empathy, which makes it clear that true friendship also includes responsibility and the willingness to do without. ” Lexicon of international film
