Flexirubin is the main pigment found within the bacterial genera Flexibacter , Flavobacterium , Chryseobacterium, and Cytophaga . It was isolated for the first time from Flexibacter elegans . In addition to flexirubin, these genera also contain carotenoids . The pigment mixture of flexirubin and carotenoids gives the colonies an intense yellow-orange color. Structurally, this bacterial pigment is a polyenecarboxylic acid chromophore that is linked via an ester bond to a phenol that has a long alkyl side chain . The total synthesis of flexirubin was described in 1977.

To detect flexirubin, 20% potassium hydroxide solution is added to the cultivated strains. A color change from yellow to red-brown indicates the presence of flexirubin. Optionally, the pigments can also be extracted with acetone and determined using chromatographic methods.
