Flexibacter is a genus of bacteria that belongs to the division of Bacteroidetes . The type species is Flexibacter flexilis . Species of Flexibacter are important soil bacteria and probably make a significant contribution to the decomposition of plant residues.

Appearance

The cells of Flexibacter are rod-shaped and 0.2 to 0.6 µm wide and between 10 and 50 µm long. There are no flagella . The cells are filamentous, they form long threads. In older cultures, these filaments usually break down into short rods. Flexibacter is motile by sliding. Spores are not formed. The gram test is negative. The colonies are colored yellow to orange or red, but sometimes only very dull or completely colorless. The pigments in many species are carotenoids and / or flexirubin .

Growth and metabolism

Species of Flexibacter are aerobic , the species F. canadensis (now listed as Solitalea canadensis ) is facultatively anaerobic . The metabolism is chemo-organotrophic . Most species can hydrolyze chitin . The filaments adhere to plant debris, and by sliding they can open up new areas. They occur in the soil and water sediments in sea and fresh water on plant remains. In contrast to the closely related bacterial species Cytophaga and Sporocytophaga , cellulose cannot be used.

Systematics

Some types:

Some species have been rearranged. So z. B. the species Flexibacter columnaris listed as Flavobacterium psychrophilum , it is the causative agent of the fish disease cold water disease of the salmonids . The species Flexibacter tractuosus was added to the genus Marivirga as M. tractuosa . The species Flexibacter sancti introduced in 1969 is now part of the genus Chitinophaga .
