history

In 1851 a merchant named Brooks opened a general store in what is now Florence and gave the new town the name "Brookville". More shops, a mill and a post office followed and the population grew. In 1957 the place was renamed "Florence". There are several versions of the naming: some chroniclers believe that this was done in honor of the merchant's daughter, Florence Brooks, others state that the first post office manager came from Florence , Alabama and therefore the same name for this place in Texas was chosen. After a railway line ran through the village, the population grew to over 1000 people and farms for cattle breeding developed and cotton and wheat were grown. During the Great Depression the population fell again and was less than 500 people at the end. With the establishment of the military base in Fort Hood, 30 kilometers to the north, in 1942, the region became more attractive again as a residential area and seat of service companies, from which Florence also benefited. The relocation of the headquarters of the Dell computer company to Round Rock, 30 kilometers south, also had a positive effect in 1996. The number of inhabitants rose to 1195 by 2012, which is an increase of 13.4% compared to the year 2000. The average age of the residents in 2012 was 30.9 years, which is well below the average for Texas, which was 40.8 years.
