Florence Aubenas
Florence Aubenas (born February 6, 1961 in Brussels , Belgium ) is a French journalist who works for the Nouvel Observateur . Before that she worked for the left-wing liberal daily Liberation . She and her Arabic translator were kidnapped by Islamist hostage-takers in Iraq in 2005 and released after 157 days in captivity .
Life
Florence Aubenas was born in Belgium, but has French nationality. She is the daughter of an EU - diplomats and a film critic . She completed her training at the Center de formation des journalistes school in Paris until she graduated in 1984 .
Among other things, she worked for the business magazine Le Nouvel Économiste . The experienced journalist has worked for the left-liberal Liberation since 1986 . Among other things, Florence Aubenas worked in war and crisis areas such as Rwanda, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. kidnapping
On January 5, 2005, she and her translator Hussein Hanoun Al-Saadi were kidnapped in Baghdad University . She was working on a report on refugees from Fallujah . On March 1, 2005, the Reuters news agency in Baghdad saw a 26-second kidnapping video showing Florence Aubenas.
She had asked the French politician Didier Julia for support for her release. In this video message she spoke in English when she was in poor health . Florence Aubenas received a lot of support during her imprisonment .
The French Foreign Ministry announced that Florence Aubenas and Hussein Hanoun Al-Saadi had been released in Iraq on the evening of June 11, 2005. On the afternoon of June 12, 2005, she was flown from Baghdad to Paris by plane and met by French President Jacques Chirac at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport . According to official sources, no ransom was paid.
