Florencio Segura Gutiérrez

Florencio Segura Gutiérrez (* 1912 in Talavera , Apurímac region , Peru ; † 2000 ibid.) Was a Peruvian evangelical pastor , songwriter and translator. He was the author of a large part of the Quechua hymns published in Peru in the 20th century and was involved in a translation of the New Testament into Chanka Quechua .

Life

Florencio Segura Gutiérrez grew up in the small town of Talavera with two brothers and two sisters in a bilingual environment with Spanish and Quechua. In the 1930s, his entire family converted to the evangelical faith and entered the Presbyterian Church .

Florencio Segura first worked as a barber in Lima and then moved to Huamanga , where he opened his own shop. There he met his future wife Inés. He also met the English missionary Alonso Hitchcock here, with whom he read the Spanish-language Bible. On February 23, 1937, he decided to live with Jesus. He started writing Christian songs, first in Spanish and later in Quechua.

Unsuccessful in his business, he returned to Talavera in 1941. In 1943 he met the missionary Kenneth Case, who wrote the melodies for Segura's spiritual Quechua texts. The two authors opted for a traditional Andean style of music for the songs. Since then, Segura has written all of his songs in Quechua . In 1946 his first hymn book was published under the title Diospa Siminmanta Takikuna (Songs from God's Word).

Together with the missionaries Homer Emerson and Kenneth Case, Segura translated the New Testament into Chanka Quechua . In 1954 the Gospels of Luke and John appeared, and in 1958 the entire New Testament.

From 1962 to 1983 Florencio Segura worked for the Christian radio Amauta in Huanta . Together with Fernando Quicaña , Rómulo Sauñe Quicaña and others, he founded the evangelical organization Tawantinsuyuman Allin Willakuy Apaqkuna (TAWA). In 1983 he returned to Talavera, where he lived with his wife until his death.

From 1943 to 1996 Segura wrote several hundred Quechua-language sacred songs, far more than the Spanish-language Christian songs published in Peru during the same period. Today these songs are sung in Protestant churches, especially in the Quechua -influenced regions of Ayacucho and Apurímac , but also in Cusco . His hymn book Diospa Siminmanta Takikuna has been published over twenty times. Some of his songs can also be found in the hymn books of Cusco, Allin Willaykunaq Takinkuna and Iñiq T'aqaq Akllasqa Takinkuna .
