Florian Beigel (* 1941 in Konstanz ; † August 25, 2018 in London ) was a German-British architect .

Life

Florian Beigel studied architecture at University College London and at the Technical University of Stuttgart after completing his apprenticeship as a carpenter . As a student he worked for Rolf Gutbrod . After graduating in 1968, he worked as an assistant to Günter Behnisch and Jürgen Joedicke and worked on the planning for the Munich Olympic Stadium , in particular together with Frei Otto . From 1969 to 1970 he was an assistant architect at Arup Associates in London.

Together with Konrad Frey , Beigel ran the architecture office “Building Planning and Resources” from 1971, based in London. They worked on thin-film patent applications and research into energy-efficient, inexpensive, and lightweight construction systems. By the time they gave up the office in 1979, both of them also completed building projects for the Fisher Fine Art Gallery near St. James's Square and the Fischer House on Grundlsee . Beigel later also founded the “Florian Beigel Architects” office. The Saemangeum Island City project in Korea, developed by Beigel together with his ARU team, was exhibited at the 2010 Venice Biennale . Most recently he worked on large urban development projects with his partner Philip Christou, including in South Korea.

In the early 1970s he taught at the London Metropolitan University , where he also founded the architecture research unit (ARU). There he developed prototype lightweight structures such as wooden lattice shells and networks, inspired by his earlier collaboration with Frei Otto and his Institute for Lightweight Structures (IL) . He taught for over 45 years, until 2017, at the Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design (The Cass) at London Metropolitan University.
