Florimond de Raemond (* 1540 in Agen ; † November 17, 1601 in Bordeaux ) was a French lawyer, conseiller du Roy en sa Cour de Parlement de Bourdeaus , counter-reformer and historian at the end of the era of humanism . He was a member of the Parliament in Bordeaux. He wrote a multi-volume history of France from a Catholic perspective.

De Raemond came from an old noble family from the area around Toulouse . His father was Robert I er de Raemond, 2e seigneur de Suquet († 1605), his mother a née Marie de Saint-Gilis. The couple had three sons and a daughter. He studied at various universities in his region and as a young man faced a growing number of supporters of Calvinism .

De Raemond was a pupil of Petrus Ramus , a Protestant convert who was murdered in the wake of the Bartholomew Night massacre. He was a friend of Michel de Montaigne and Blaise de Montesquiou . From 1570 onwards, de Raemond became an ardent Catholic apologist . When Montaigne withdrew from his administrative duties, de Raemond took over his office on July 23, 1570 at the Parlement , the royal court in Bordeaux. As a district judge in Bordeaux, he was accused of being anti-Protestant. He was one of the city's leading intellectuals .

In literary terms he took an active part in the religious conflict in the second half of the 16th century. His main work was Histoire de naissance, progres, et decadence de l'heresie de ce siecle , which only appeared posthumously in Paris in 1605. It has been translated into various languages ​​such as Latin , German and Dutch .

De Raemond was married to Catherine de Rosteguy de Lancre. She was the sister of Pierre de Rosteguy de Lancre (1553-1631) and daughter of Étienne de Rosteguy († 1563), conseiller du roi et seigneur de Lancre . De Raemond and his wife had three daughters and three sons.
