The Batajnica airport , alternatively Nova Pazova Airport , ( Serbian : Аеродром Батајница / Aerodrom Batajnica ) is located in Serbia between the villages of Batajnica and Nova Pazova , about 25 kilometers northwest of the capital Belgrade .
The airport is currently mainly used for military purposes by the Serbian air force and air defense and is the only airport in Serbia with two asphalt runways .
history
Construction of the airport for the Serbian Air Force and Air Defense began in 1947. In 1951, construction work was completed and the airport officially opened. The purpose of the construction was to defend the capital Belgrade from air raids .
In order to limit the possibilities of intervention by the Yugoslav Air Force during the NATO attacks on the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , the military airfield was one of the most frequently attacked targets during the war with 25 operations flown and the associated bombing .
Two with the landing F-16 multi-role combat aircraft of the USAFE in June 2006 ended after more than 20 years back officially US fighter jets on Serbian soil. This invitation from Serbia is seen as a rapprochement between the armed forces and constitutes a new beginning of the military cooperation between the two states . The US Air Force visited the airport again from March 9th to 13th, 2009, again focusing on improving relationships.
Today the airport is mainly used by the Serbian Air Force and also acts as a host for flight shows , such as in 2009 for Air Serbia . There are also plans to use the airport for civil aviation in the future; according to some plans, such as Frankfurt Hahn for Frankfurt for Belgrade, the airport could then serve as the base for the low-cost airlines . Several companies such as EasyJet , Jet2 and Germanwings have already shown interest in this project.
