The Medina airport (long form International Airport Prince Mohammad bin Abd-al-Aziz , English / international spelling Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport , Arabic مطار الأمير محمد بن عبد العزيز الدولي) is the international passenger airport to the Saudi city of Medina and an important transportation hub for pilgrims in the second holiest city of Islam .

history

The airport at that time gained international importance in 2007, so that the first destinations were outside the region and Saudi Arabia. The new airport building was first tested on April 12, 2015, 11:00 a.m., by a landing of the Saudi Arabian Airlines flight SV1435. On July 2, 2015, the airport was inaugurated by King Salman ibn Abd al-Aziz and baptized in the name of the former Crown Prince Muhammad bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud .

Airlines and Destinations

The airport is not served by any European airline , but almost exclusively by airlines from countries with a Muslim majority. This is also related to the ban on entry for non-Muslims in the holy city of Medina. Many flights are only operated during the Hajj period, when several airlines from many countries bring pilgrims into the city.

In addition to national destinations in Saudi Arabia, which are mainly operated by Saudi Arabian Airlines or Flynas , there are also many destinations on the Arabian Peninsula and in the rest of the Arab region (e.g. North Africa). There are also connections to other predominantly Muslim countries. International short and medium- haul flights are mainly operated by airlines from the respective countries or by Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Long-haul connections exist to Europe through Saudi Arabian Airlines (e.g. Frankfurt ) and to distant predominantly Muslim countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia , which are served by Saudi Arabian Airlines and Garuda , among others .
