The Mostar Airport ( Bosnian Međunarodni aerodrom Mostar , Croatian Međunarodna Zračna Luka Mostar , Serbian Међународни аеродром Мостар ) is an international airport south of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina .
history
The airport was built in 1930 and initially only served the air force of the Yugoslav People's Army and the military aircraft manufacturer Soko , located in Mostar . In 1965 it was opened for civil aviation within the former Yugoslavia . Before the 1984 Winter Olympics , the airport was given the status of an international airport in order to relieve the Sarajevo airport .
Since then, the number of passengers rose steadily until 1989, when the airport recorded 86,000 passengers and a passenger number of 100,000 was expected for 1990, but this was not achieved. Due to the beginning of the Bosnian War , the last civil flight took place in November 1991.
Since the end of the war in 1995, it has been used by the United Nations Protection Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina, then still by IFOR and now by EUFOR .
The airport was reopened for civil air traffic on July 7, 1998 by the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina Carlos Westendorp after the burnt-out and destroyed terminal was rebuilt with the help of EU funds. As a result, the pilgrimage town of Međugorje , only 20 kilometers to the southwest, was again connected to international air traffic, after the airports in Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia had been used for this purpose since 1991 .
Airlines and Destinations
In addition to Croatia Airlines , which serves Mostar twice a week from Zagreb , it also serves two destinations in German-speaking countries . Eurowings flies once a week from Düsseldorf and twice a week from Stuttgart to the Herzegovinian city.
