The honorary citizenship is the highest honor that the city of Wuppertal awards. It honors personalities who have rendered outstanding services to the city. After the Second World War, the city had made 13 people honorary citizens. Neither privileges nor obligations are attached to honorary citizenship.

In addition, in 1933 Adolf Hitler , Paul von Hindenburg and August Wilhelm von Prussia were made honorary citizens. These honors were revoked after the end of the Second World War.

The predecessor communities Barmen and Elberfeld as well as Cronenberg and Ronsdorf have also given honorary citizenship. Vohwinkel probably did not confer honorary citizenship during the time with the city regulations (1921–1929). However, the information on this is incomplete.
