Johann Friedrich Hector Philippi (born March 16, 1802 in Hanover , † January 1, 1880 in Poppelsdorf near Bonn) was a German lawyer and national liberal member of the Prussian House of Representatives .

Life

Philippi was the youngest son of Johann Jacob Martin Philippi Marianne Amalia geb. Wertheimer. He studied law and philosophy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . During his studies he became a member of the old Bonn fraternity in 1820 . Then he completed the preparatory service for the Prussian judicial service. From 1827 he worked as an assessor for the public prosecutor's offices at the Cologne Regional Court and the Kleve Regional Court . There he was appointed state procurator in 1831. In 1838 he moved to Cologne as a judge of appeal . Between 1848 and 1875 Philippi was President of the Elberfeld Regional Court .

After the Elberfeld uprising against the counter-revolution in Prussia in 1849, Philippi was part of a delegation that was supposed to ask the Prussian government in Berlin to “re-grace” the city after the revolution . He conducted the relevant negotiations mainly with Joseph von Radowitz .

In 1869 Philippi was elected to the Prussian House of Representatives as a non-party member of the constituency of Düsseldorf 2 (districts of Elberfeld and Barmen). There he joined the National Liberal Party as a guest student , before becoming a member in 1873. In 1873 he was re-elected. For health reasons, however, he resigned on May 18, 1874.

Philippi wrote various legal commentaries , some of which saw multiple editions. This included comments on the civil status laws (first in 1838), the guardianship order (first in 1859) and on the mortgage order (1860). These works were widely used handbooks of Rhenish law.

He was made an honorary citizen in 1875 for his services to the city of Elberfeld . In addition, in 1873 he was awarded the honorary title of a Secret Higher Justice Council and in 1868 an honorary doctorate (as Dr. jur. Utr. Hc) from the University of Bonn.
