The Osvaldo Vieira International Airport , ( Portuguese Aeroporto Internacional de Osvaldo Vieira Bissau ) is a commercial airport in Bissau, capital of Guinea-Bissau . It is the only international airport in the country that is served by scheduled flights and is located about nine kilometers northwest of the city center of the capital Bissau . The airport was named after the Guinea-Bissau independence fighter Osvaldo Vieira .
history
The airport was built in the 1950s during the Portuguese colonial era. During the Portuguese colonial era, the airport was named after the Portuguese President and General Francisco Craveiro Lopes .
The airport was closed for some time in the course of the civil war in 1998/1999 - it was reopened for passenger traffic in July 1999 after its end.
Furnishing
Most of the airport was built in colonial times, and only a few additions have been made since then. The terminal includes a check-in area, which is directly connected to the gate area, and an arrival area with a baggage carousel. On the first floor of the airport there is a viewing terrace and a restaurant as well as the Guinea-Bissau delegation of the pan-African air traffic control agency ASECA.
There is a large car park in front of the airport. The airport is practically on the Avenida dos Combatentes da Liberdade da Pátria artery , from which both Bissau city center and the rest of the country can be reached.
Airlines and destinations
Overall, since the bankruptcy of the state-owned airline Air Bissau, there are only a relatively few airlines that fly to or from Bissau. Usually there are only one or two flights a day to and from Bissau.
The Moroccan Royal Air Maroc connects Bissau several times a week with the Casablanca hub, through which numerous destinations can be reached. Asky Airlines flies to Dakar once a week, which has connections to numerous West African destinations. However, the main destination of many travelers is Lisbon Airport, which is served up to three times a week by TAP Portugal and once a week by EuroAtlantic Airways . The Cape Verdean Cabo Verde Airlines (TACV) flies twice a week via Praia .
In addition, private flights are offered by small aircraft or helicopter to the islands of the Bissagos Archipelago and into the hinterland of Guinea-Bissau.
