Osvaldo Vieira
Osvaldo Vieira (* 1939 in Bissau , Portuguese Guinea ; † March 31, 1974 in Koundara , Guinea-Conakry ) was a Guinea-Bissau resistance fighter and high-ranking official of the PAIGC .
Life
Osvaldo Vieira was born in 1939 in Bissau, which later became the capital of the Portuguese colony of Guinea. His cousin was the future president and João Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, also born in 1939 .
Osvaldo Vieira joined the PAIGC resistance and independence movement in his youth. Vieira is part of a group of ten resistance fighters who were sent by the PAIGC to train at the Nanjing Military Academy in the People's Republic of China in 1961 . After his return, Vieira fought on the northern front and led, among other things, the attack on the Portuguese military facility of Morés ( Oio region ) on July 7, 1963. In 1964, Vieira completed another military training in the People's Republic of China, after this return he was in charge of the whole PAIGC troops on the northern front, stationed in Morés camp, captured in 1963.
Together with other leading PAIGC fighters such as Francisco Mendes , António N'Bana and Inocêncio Cani , he carried out various attacks on the Portuguese colonial troops and thus considerably expanded the area of influence of the PAIGC independence movement. With the death of Domingos Ramos in November 1966, Vieira took over the leadership of the Eastern Front, supported by Pedro Pires . Together with Pires, PAIGC leader Cabral , Aristides Pereira , Luís Cabral , Francisco Mendes and João Bernardo Vieira , they formed the PAIGC's ( Conselho da Guerra ) war council . He was also a member of the Politburo ( Bureau Político ) and the Combat Executive Committee ( Comité Executivo da Luta ) of the PAIGC.
Osvaldo Vieira died on March 31, 1974 after an operation at the PAIGC hospital in Koundara in Guinea-Conakry. Vieira is one of the heroes named and glorified by the PAIGC. In the headquarters of the Guinea-Bissau Army (Fort Amura) in the capital Bissau there is a memorial for 10 Guinea-Bissau heroines and heroes, Vieira is also commemorated there. Furthermore, Guinea-Bissau's only international airport in Bissau is named after him.
