The NAe São Paulo (ID: A-12) was the only aircraft carrier in the Brazilian Navy and South America during its active service . It was named after the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo . The Clemenceau- class carrier was bought in September 2000 from the French Navy , for which it had been in service from 1963 under the name Foch (identification: R99).

history

The support was 15 November 1957 by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire set to Kiel and expired on 23 July 1960 from the stack . The Foch was the second ship of the French Navy named after Marshal Ferdinand Foch and entered service on July 15, 1963.

After 37 years, it was sold to Brazil in 2000. The purchase price was twelve million US dollars, not including aircraft. In November of the same year, Brazil took over the aircraft carrier. After a renovation, the official commissioning followed in 2001. Brazil originally planned to use the São Paulo as a supplement to the aircraft carrier Minas Gerais , which was commissioned in 1956 , but due to necessary cost-cutting measures, it was decided to operate only one aircraft carrier. With the commissioning of the São Paulo in 2001, the Minas Gerais was therefore retired.

From May 2005 to the beginning of 2010, the São Paulo in Rio de Janeiro was overhauled. Among other things, the drive was renewed and the catapult technology was completely overhauled. While serving in the Brazilian Navy, the ship had constant maintenance problems and was never more than three months in a row without maintenance or repairs.

The São Paulo supported combat aircraft of the type AF-1 (modified A-4M ), Grumman C-1 transport / tanker aircraft to AWACS planes For converted Grumman S-2 , which is also in the ASW were used version, as well as Sikorsky UH-60 helicopter. She was the flagship of the Brazilian Navy.

After the Indian Viraat was decommissioned in 2016, the São Paulo was the oldest active aircraft carrier in the world until it was decommissioned. In February 2017, the Brazilian Navy announced that the São Paulo was to be decommissioned because modernization would be too expensive. The São Paulo was decommissioned on November 22, 2018. It was replaced by Ocean, which was bought by Great Britain .
