The Fogra Research Institute for Media Technologies eV is a non-profit, registered association (eV) based in Aschheim near Munich.

Its purpose is to promote printing and media technology in the areas of research, development and application and to make the results usable for the printing industry . Fogra has around 900 members (as of 2019). Around two thirds of these belong to the printing industry with business areas from prepress to postpress, the remaining third belong to the supplier industry. Over 35% of the members are based outside Germany.

The association maintains its own institute with almost 50 employees, including engineers , chemists and physicists , who work on research topics with a budget of around € 5 million per year that were previously endorsed by the Fogra Technical Advisory Council.

With the aim of standardization, the association is involved in standardization committees and other organizations. Among other things, he is an honorary member of the International Color Consortium (ICC) and is an active member of ISO TC 130 Graphic Technology.

Research departments

Fogra cooperates with the " Bundesverband Druck und Medien eV " (bvdm) and the "viscom" (Swiss Association for Visual Communication) and is a member of the " Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrial research associations " (AiF) and the "IARIGAI" (International Association of Research Institutes) for the Printing, Information and Communication Industries).

history

  • May 9, 1951: Founding in Wiesbaden under the name "German Society for the Promotion of Research in the Graphic Arts Industry" chaired by Wilhelm Lampl.
  • September 1, 1951: Change of name to "German Society for Research in the Graphic Industry" (hence the abbreviation Fogra) and relocation of the headquarters to Munich .
  • 1954: First participation at drupa .
  • 1970: Name change to "German Society for Printing and Reproduction Technology".
  • 1977: First joint project with Ugra .
  • 1993: Change of name to “Fogra Forschungsgesellschaft Druck”.
  • 1997: Fogra Symposium “Computer Publishing” as part of MacWorld & Publishing Expo , development of the Ugra / Fogra media wedge .
  • 2001: The bvdm manual " Process Standard Offset Printing ", which was created in collaboration with Fogra, appears.
  • 2008: Fogra Color Management Symposium “Science meets color”, 326 participants from 27 countries.
  • 2009: First Fogra digital printing symposium “Digital printing meets offset”.
  • 2010: "ISO news" as a new Fogra publication. New scanning electron microscope with 3D imaging.
  • 2011: Technical advisory boards adapted to technical developments; new: TB digital printing, TB functional products and identity cards. First symposium on the production of ID cards "Smart Card Production".
  • 2012: New "Operational Checkup" and "Energy Checkup" services. Publication of the "Process Standard Digital Printing". Institute director and managing director of Fogra, Dr. Eduard Neufeld, becomes Vice President of the AiF.
  • 2013: "Online Print Symposium" organized by the three organizers Fogra, Bundesverband Druck und Medien, zipcon consulting.
  • 2014: Advice on the energy efficiency of conventional and digital printing systems, associated practical guide for free download.
  • 2017: Name change to "Fogra Research Institute for Media Technologies".
  • 2018: Official inauguration of the new institute building in Aschheim near Munich.
