After secondary school, he completed an acting training at the drama school of the Göteborg City Theater (Göteborgs Stadsteater) from the early 1940s . 1950 Sundquist was engaged to the Malmö City Theater (Malmö Stadsteater); he remained connected to this theater over the next thirty years of his stage career. As an actor, Sundquist interpreted a wide repertoire , which included plays by William Shakespeare , the Scandinavian theater of the turn of the century , but also plays from modern times and contemporary theater. Sundquist played roles in both serious trade and comedies; He also made occasional trips to operettas and musicals .

He appeared in Was ihr wollt , Andromache , Die Kamelliendame (1956 as Armand Duval with Inga Tigblad in the title role), in the comedies Invitation to the Castle and The Orchestra by Jean Anouilh , in the comedy Die Lästerschule ( Skandalskolan ) by Richard Brinsley Sheridan and in the musicals My Fair Lady and Irma la Douce . Sundquist also worked for film and television . Between 1951 and 1968, the end of his film career, he made about twenty feature films and television films; thereafter Sundquist devoted himself exclusively to his career as a theater actor. Sundquist was discovered for the film by the Swedish director Arne Mattsson at a performance of Hans Nåd's Testamente in Gothenburg. He then cast Sundquist and Jacobsson for his film drama You Danced Just One Summer (1951). Sundquist played the high school graduate Göran Stendahl, who fell in love with the farmer girl Kerstin during the summer vacation in the country. A short love scene in which Sundquist and Jacobsson were seen completely naked caused a stir at the time.

Under Mattsson's direction, he also played the student Torben Altman in the love drama It Happened from Hot Childhood Love (1952), a prison inmate in the film drama The Bread of Love (1953) and the businessman Christer Berg in his last film, Bamse (1968), in which he was seen again together with Ulla Jacobsson. For the cinema he also worked with Ingmar Bergman. In his film drama Wild Strawberries (1957) he played the hitchhiker Anders and was one of the admirers of the film character Sarah.
