For You (Bruce Springsteen song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For You is a song written and composed by Bruce Springsteen , produced in 1972 and released on his debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ in 1973 . The song is also on the compilation album The Essential Bruce Springsteen . The song was u. A. von Manfred Mann's Earth Band , The format and Greg Kihn gecovert .

Music and lyrics

For You was recorded at 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt on June 27, 1972, the same day the rest of the album was recorded except for Blinded by the Light and Spirit in the Night . Contributing musicians, besides the future E Street Band , were David Sancious , Garry Tallent and Vini Lopez. It is a tapering, beat-driven song. Unlike many of the other songs on this album, this song is given the time to build up pace and tension.

The text is about a woman who wants to commit suicide. She doesn't need the urgency (of the singer) because her life is a one long emergency , and as Springsteen continues to sing in the chorus : "Your cloud line is bothering me, and my tension is flowing freely" ( and your cloud line urges me, and my electric surges free ). The singer is obliged to do everything possible to save her and admires her for her strength to endure. However, the text is always pictorial and imprecise and hardly anything can be described precisely. In many live concerts, including the critically acclaimed Hammersmith Odeon London '75 , Bruce changed the song to a compassionate piano ballad with no musical accompaniment.

Cover versions

Manfred Mann's Earth Band version

Just like Blinded By The Light (on The Roaring Silence ) and Spirits in the Night (on Nightingales & Bombers ), this song was covered by Manfred Mann's Earth Band for their album Chance. As with the previous cover versions of Bruce Springsteen, Manfred Mann Earth Band played a punchier and rockier sound on For You . The version of the Earth Band begins moderately up to a sound explosion in the bridge and includes five guitars and a keyboard solo by Manfred Mann (three-quarters of the song, starting with the intro). This song is also on the compilation album The Best of Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Blinded by the Light & Other Hits . However, this single release has not achieved the success of other Springsteen covers.

Greg Kihn version

This song was also covered by Greg Kihn on his 1977 album Greg Kihn Again . Kihn's cover received positive comments from Springsteen. This version was also on the compilation album Best of Kihn .

Other cover versions

This song was also covered by The Format for the Springsteen tribute album Light of Day . This version is also on their B-Sides & Rarities album.

2005 produced The Disco Boys , a dance version of the song, while the cover version of Manfred Mann's Earth Band sampled have.
