Forever Activists: Stories from the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade is a 1990 American documentary directed by Connie Field and Judith Montell . It features interviews with American veterans who fought in the Spanish Civil War.

action

The film is based on the thesis that for many Americans who fought in the Spanish Civil War, it was just the continuation of a fight for a cause they believe in. This also shows the commitment of many soldiers who later became involved in the civil rights movement and in the protests against the Vietnam War .

In the film, old news clips are juxtaposed with newer interviews. All the people who were introduced lived through the global economic crisis and, after Franklin D. Roosevelt's impressive speeches, went to Spain to idealistically fight for the just cause.

The climax of the film is a reunion of veterans on the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of war in Spain in the spring of 1986. In addition to a summary of their war experiences, the former veterans also tell of how badly they were treated by McCarthy after their return to the era . Passports were confiscated, they lost their jobs at home and their reputation was damaged, even though they actually fought for peace and freedom in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade .

background

The film was at the Oscar ceremony in 1991 as Best Documentary nomination.
