Fort Duvernette (also Fort Rock ) is a defense structure on the Duvernette Islet in the state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . Inside there are two batteries with cannons that were built during the island's colonial days.

location

Fort Duvernette is located on the Duvernette Islet rock. This rock was created by volcanic activity in the region and is made of basalt . Duvernette Islet is located south of mainland St. Vincent near the luxury resort on Young Island .

tourism

Fort Duvernette is one of the most famous attractions of the small island state in the Caribbean . The island can only be reached by boat. These start in the port of the nearby town of Vila. After arriving on the rock, a spiral staircase with 255 steps carved into the rock leads to the top. In addition to the fort itself, the place is visited by many tourists due to the panoramic view over the sea and the mainland in the north. Entry is 5 EC dollars (East Caribbean $ ) but is not required regularly.

Construction work

In 1800 , at the time of British colonial rule on St. Vincent and the Grenadines , the fort was built to protect the city of Calliaqua Bay, an important city during colonial times, against attacks.

In 2010 some work was done on Duvernette Islet. The island's jetty was rebuilt, a viewing platform was built, safety nets were tensioned, signage was installed and garbage cans were set up.

owner

Fort Duvernette has been under the administration of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines National Trust since 1971 . He is responsible for the maintenance of the facilities and also offers guided tours for tourists .
