Fortunabad
The Fortunabad was a natural swimming pool in Leipzig - Knautkleeberg , which is now used as a fishing water.
Location and shape
The Fortunabad is located east of Knautkleeberg in the Aue between the White Elster and the Knauthainer Elstermühlgraben near the Elster. It is surrounded by alluvial forest.
The total water area of 25,370 square meters is divided into three sub-areas from 140 to 200 meters in length. These are each separated by a dam. The mean depth of the water is 1.5 meters. It has an inlet via the Fortunabadgraben from Elstermühlgraben and an outlet into the same via the Windorf Augraben.
history
Around 1890, a brickworks in this area began mining alluvial clay for brick production. After the dismantling stopped, the Knautkleeberg community decided to build an outdoor and air bath and bought the site. Partly supported by the population's own contribution, the Fortunabad was built with a swimming pond, compartments for non-swimmers, small children and women, diving boards, cabins and sports field. The pool was fed with groundwater and spring water. The day it opened was August 20, 1920. The pool soon became a popular destination for people from Leipzig.
From 1923 the Fortunabad was operated as a GmbH . There were around 50 shareholders, mainly associations, which took on certain tasks in the operation of the pool. After the Second World War , this type of operation was no longer possible. The attempt to renovate it in the 1950s failed and the bathroom continued to deteriorate.
Finally, the area was handed over to the German Angler Association for use. It is now a fishing area near the city. The fish species mainly represented today are eel , pike , carp , tench , catfish , white fish and pikeperch .
