Foulum is a village in the Midtjylland region in Denmark . It is 14 kilometers east of Viborg , belongs to the municipality of Viborg and had 174 inhabitants in 2014.
The place name Foulum is first recorded in 1440, in 1447 in the form Føvlom , after the Old Danish fyghli (German wild fowl ) and the suffix -um (settlement).
Niels Heidenreich was born here in 1761 , who stole the gold horns from Gallehus in 1802 .
Research Center AU Foulum
South of the settlement is the AU Foulum research center , a department of the National Center for Food and Agriculture at Aarhus University ( DCA - Nationalt Center for Fødevarer og Jordbrug ).
The first construction phase was put into operation in 1984, today the area extends to around 120,000 m 2 with research institutes and test stalls for a wide variety of livestock . The largest biogas research institute in the world belongs to the center . A total of around 700 employees are employed at AU Foulum, both in basic research and in practice-oriented contract research. Research is focused on the areas of resource exploitation, environmental protection, animal welfare and product quality.
Location as a data center
In 2015, the American Apple company decided to build a European data center in Foulum in 2019 . The total investment is around $ 950 million. Denmark's energy minister called the project the "largest of all foreign investments in the history of the country." Here the energy prices are one of the cheapest, most of the energy is generated sustainably. In addition, there would be security of supply. Therefore, Facebook also announced the construction of its third data center outside the USA near Odense in January 2017 .
In November 2017, Google announced that it was building a large data center in addition to Apple's data center. In addition to the 131 hectare property in the greater Aabenraa area , Google owns a 73 hectare property in Fredericia , 80 kilometers north of Aabenraa.
