Fourteen Foot Bank Light is a lighthouse on the east coast of the United States .
location
The building is located in the Delaware Bay near the Bowers Beach in Kent County , Delaware , on the southern tip of Joe Flogger- shoal . The structure is embedded in the seabed of the North Atlantic . The beacon is about 18 km from the coast; therefore it is not visible to the naked eye from land.
Building
The structure was built between 1885 and 1886. It was the first lighthouse to be built from wood using a pneumatic caisson . This component was dug 7 meters underground and filled with 1500 m³ of concrete; it serves as a foundation. The lighthouse, which looks more like a house, was built according to plans by HA Ramsay and Son ( Baltimore ). Engineers were Anderson and Barr. The general contractor was DP Heap. The construction cost was US $ 125,000. Regular operations began on April 10, 1887. The beacon is about 18 meters above sea level. The original 4th order Fresnel lens was replaced in 1997 by a solar- powered VRB-25 .
The lighthouse has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since March 27, 1989 .
