Spring Awakening is an Austrian silent film made in Germany in 1923 by the married couple Jakob Fleck and Luise Fleck based on the drama of the same name (1891) by Frank Wedekind .

Moritz Stiefel is very hardworking, but despite everything a bad student. His classmate Melchior Gabor, however, finds everything easy. Both are in competition with Wendla Bergmann, who is of the same age. Moritz's fear of his strict father, who demands more effort and better grades from his son, drives Moritz Stiefel to suicide. Meanwhile, a love affair unfolds between Melchior and Wendla, and she is soon pregnant with the boy, who seems to have succeeded in everything. Driven by this into great hardship, Wendla goes to an angel maker. She dies in the next dangerous abortion .
Production notes
Although an Austrian production, Spring Awakening was created in Berlin in the spring of 1923. The film passed the German censorship on May 28, 1923, and it premiered on August 31, 1923 in the Alhambra cinema in Berlin. In January of the following year, Spring Awakening was also shown in cinemas in Vienna. The film was 2070 meters long, divided into five acts. A youth ban was issued.
Julian Ballenstedt designed the buildings .
criticism
Vienna's Neue Freie Presse wrote in 1924: “The film… is technically quite nice. The direction is also impressive. The presentation is almost always very good. Frieda Richard, for example, is splendid as the mother of little Wendla. Hertha Müller's Wendla is also a respectable achievement ... "
