François-Etienne Kellermann (born August 4, 1770 in Metz , † June 2, 1835 in Paris ), Peer of France , was a French cavalry general who played a decisive role in Napoleon's victory at Marengo with a cavalry attack . In 1820 he inherited the title "Duke of Valmy" from his father.

Life

François-Etienne Kellermann took part in the first campaigns of the First Coalition War under his father François-Christophe Kellermann , who later became Marshal of France and Duke of Valmy , and was adjutant general in Napoleon Bonaparte's army in 1796 , where he crossed the Tagliamento by his determined attack on the Austrian cavalry.

As Général de brigade , he decided the battle of Marengo in 1800 by suddenly falling with his heavy cavalry brigade of the Austrian grenadier column advancing on the Strait of Alessandria into the flank, so that it was blown up; Napoleon promoted him for this to the general de division .

He then fought in the Battle of Austerlitz and from 1807 to 1811 in Portugal and Spain . In 1813 he was ordered to Saxony and took part in the battle of Bautzen . In the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig he commanded the IV Cavalry Corps.

Louis XVIII appointed him in 1814 inspector general of the cavalry stationed in Lunéville and Nancy .

When Napoleon returned from Elba , Kellermann became Peer of France , fought in the Battle of Ligny and the Battle of Waterloo , but after the second restoration lost the peerage and was put up for discussion.

Rehabilitated as peer after Charles X accession to the throne, he voted for the death of the overthrown ministers after the July Revolution , which he welcomed with enthusiasm. Kellermann died on June 2, 1835. His son was the diplomat François-Christophe-Edouard Kellermann .

Honors

His name is entered on the triumphal arch in Paris in the 21st column (KELLERMANN, F).
