François-Mathurin Gourvès

François-Mathurin Gourvès (born June 17, 1929 in Plougastel-Daoulas , Finistère department ; † August 12, 2020 in Sainte-Anne-d'Auray , Morbihan department ) was a French clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Vannes .

Life

François-Mathurin Gourvès, son of a peasant family, first studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (IEP) and then entered the Grand Séminaire de Quimper . He completed his theological training at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and at the Institut Catholique de Paris . He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Quimper on April 6, 1953 . He then completed his training at the Institute for Labor Social Sciences in Paris .

From 1957 to 1967 he was the diocesan chaplain of the Christian Youth Workers (Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne JOC / JOCF). In 1969 he was appointed Dean of Saint-Sauveur in Brest . In 1975 he became vicar general . In 1989 he became general secretary of the social commission in the French episcopate.

Pope John Paul II named him Coadjutor Bishop of Vannes on December 19, 1990 . He was ordained episcopate on February 24, 1991 by the Bishop of Vannes, Pierre Boussard ; Co- consecrators were Francis Barbu , Bishop of Quimper , and Joseph Madec , Bishop of Fréjus-Toulon .

After Pierre Boussard's retirement , he succeeded him on November 16, 1991 in the office of Bishop of Vannes. On June 28, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
