François Alfonsi

François Alfonsi (born September 14, 1953 in Ajaccio , Corsica ) is a French politician of the Corsican nationalist party Partitu di a Nazione Corsa (PNC). He was a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014 , and in the 2019 election he moved back to the European Parliament. There he is a member of the group The Greens / EFA .

Life

Alfonsi has been active in Corsican nationalism since the 1970s and was chairman of the Corsican People's Union for a long time , which became part of the PNC in 2002. In 1987 Alfonsi was elected to the Corsican regional parliament. Since 2002 he has been the mayor of the Corsican municipality of Osani .

In the European elections in France in 2009 , Alfonsi entered the Europe Écologie list , which also included the French Greens , and won a seat in the European Parliament . After Max Simoni (1989–94) he is the first Corsican nationalist to enter the European Parliament. As the PNC at European level member of the European party European Free Alliance is located Alfonsi joined the group The Greens / European Free Alliance in the European Parliament on. In the seventh legislative period (2009-2014) was a member of the Committee on Regional Development as well as the delegation in the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and the delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean . He was an alternate member of the Committee on Budgets , the Committee on Culture and Education and the Delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries and the Arab Maghreb Union .

He did not win a mandate in the 2014 European elections.

In 2019, Alfonsi ran again as a candidate in 9th place on the joint European election list of Europe Écologie-Les Verts (EELV), Alliance écologiste indépendante (AEI) and Régions et peuples solidaires (to which his party PNC belongs) in the European elections in 2019 . The joint list won 13.43 percent, 13 of the 79 French mandates, including Alfonsi. Since then is again a member of the ninth European Parliament and rejoined the Greens / EFA group . For the parliamentary group, he is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and a deputy member of the Committee on Regional Development .
