François Chamoux

François Chamoux (born April 4, 1915 in Mirecourt , Vosges , † October 21, 2007 in Paris ) was a French ancient historian , classical archaeologist and classical philologist .

Chamoux attended high schools in Chartres and Metz and the Lycée Henri IV in Paris and studied at the École normal supérieure from 1934, graduating from the Agrégé des lettres in classical languages ​​in 1938. He then did his military service in World War II (for which he did the Croix de Guerre with a silver star) and was seriously wounded in 1941. From 1943 to 1948 he was at the École française d'Athènes . He then worked as an assistant at the University of Lille and at the Sorbonne and a teacher at a Paris high school (Lycée). In 1952 he received his doctorate on Cyrene under the Battiades at the Sorbonne and the Charioteer of Delphi and was then professor in Nancy and from 1960 to 1983 professor of Greek literature and civilization at the Sorbonne.

He also wrote complete accounts of Greek cultural and art history and a biography of Marcus Antonius, translated into German . He was considered both an excellent connoisseur of Greek art and ancient Greek poetry (especially epigrams ). As a Homer connoisseur, he regularly took part in the symposia in Chios.

He excavated a lot in Greece (already in his time at the École francaise in Athens in the 1940s), including in Delphi , Thasos , the colonies of Cyrene in Libya .

Since 1981 he was a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres . 1974 to 1987 he was editor of the Revue des Études grecques .
